Leonid is also a faculty member in the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasion Studies at the University of Chicago and has published more than 100 scientific papers on the mathematical modeling of aging and mortality in collaboration with Dr. Natalia S. Gavrilova. Their book ‘The Biology of Life Span: A Quantitative Approach’ is cited as a recommended reference by Encyclopedia Britannica.
He has been the lead investigator on research projects funded by the Society of Actuaries, National Institute on Aging, European Union (INTAS program), and the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF). He was PI of the NIA-funded research project “Biodemography of Exceptional Longevity in the United States,” which investigated the biological and social correlates of people that live to over 100 years old.
Leonid’s work has been featured in a variety of publications, such as Population Research and Policy Review, North American Actuarial Journal, Social Biology, Journal of Theoretical Biology, Population, Demographic Research, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, Human Biology, and the Handbook of the Biology of Aging. He also serves on several editorial boards and has received recognition from the Moscow Society of Naturalists, the International Science Foundation, and the European Union.
