Charts to Explore the Medicare Population

Overall, 97.5 percent of beneficiaries lived only in the community, 2.3 percent lived only in facilities, and 0.2 percent lived in both the community and facilities. For beneficiaries living only in the community, 11.9 percent were under age 65, 50.9 percent were ages 65 to 74, 27.8 percent were ages 75-84, and 9.5 percent were age 85 and older. For beneficiaries living only in facilities, 13.3 percent were under age 65, 19.7 percent were ages 65-74, 24.3 percent were ages 75-84, and 42.7 percent were age 85 and older. For beneficiaries living in both the community and in facilities, 64.2 percent were age 85 and older.

The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCSB) is a leading source of information on Medicare and its impact on the health and well-being of beneficiaries.

NORC supports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) with the release of the MCBS Chartbook and other resources to increase the accessibility and utility of the survey data. The MCBS Chartbook provides the public with a collection of interactive charts and corresponding tables presenting annual estimates from both the MCBS Survey File and Cost Supplement File.

Beginning with the release of 2021 MCBS data, this online MCBS Chartbook replaces the PDF version of the MCBS Chartbook that was updated and released annually on the CMS MCBS website. The MCBS Chartbook allows users to create charts (and the corresponding tables) for a wide variety of measures of interest using a series of drop-down menus and/or filter lists.
