Christine Cox Named Senior Fellow in the Health Care Department of NORC at the University Chicago
CHICAGO, IL (January 2, 2018) — Christine Cox, the former acting chief data officer for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has been named a senior fellow in the Health Care department of NORC at the University of Chicago.
“Christine Cox is a nationally recognized expert in federal and state health data systems who brings to us more than three decades of experience in work with agencies of the federal government on strategies to improve health outcomes and health system transformation,” said Michael Davern, executive vice president and director of Health Care Research at NORC. “We are delighted that her vast body of skill and experience will be brought to bear in advancing the work of NORC on key issues facing the health and well-being of this nation’s people.”
Davern added that NORC will benefit from Cox’s extensive knowledge of health-related data systems, including Medicare and Medicaid data, the National Health Interview Surveys, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, and the National Death Index.
“There is no more pressing issue facing the nation than the effort to improve the quality and reach of its health care systems,” said Cox. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues at NORC in the ongoing effort to improve how local, state, federal, and private health care systems work together in ways that will more fully meet the health care needs of all Americans.”
During her tenure in the federal sector, Cox served as the acting chief data officer for CMS, leading efforts to increase transparency into CMS programs through improved data access and dissemination activities. While working for the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), she directed the NCHS Data Linkage Program, leading projects designed to integrate federal and state data resources with national survey data to enable innovative analysis of public health and health care systems.
A frequent speaker at national and international conferences, Cox has collaborated on many peer-reviewed and government publications on topics that include data linkage methodologies, disclosure avoidance techniques, and epidemiologic studies. She also has served as an expert advisor on several federal agency boards and committees, including the CMS Data Governance Board, NCHS and Social Security Administration (SSA) Data Disclosure Review Boards, the SSA Epidemiologic Verification Service Advisory Board, the National Death Index Advisory Board, and the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology Subcommittees on Confidentiality and Data Access and Use of Administrative Records.
Cox has an undergraduate and master’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland.
She will work in NORC’s Bethesda offices.
