Problem

LGBTQIA2S+ youth are at increased risk of suicide.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) youth have a higher risk of suicide than their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Though evidence-based suicide prevention programs and approaches exist, they are rarely tailored to meet the unique and emerging needs of LGBTQIA2S+ youth.

Solution

NORC developed resource guides for professionals, families, and communities who live and work with LGBTQIA2S+ youth.

NORC worked with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center to develop and disseminate a suicide prevention resource guide for technical assistance providers and four focus guides for state agencies, schools, health care providers, and families and communities who live and work with LGBTQIA2S+ youth. These guides were informed by input from experts, professionals, those with suicide-centered lived experience, and LGBTQIA2S+ youth and their parents. They highlight strategies and tips for selecting and implementing strengths-based approaches for mental health promotion and suicide prevention.

Result

The guides will help professionals, families, and communities to foster affirming environments for LGBTQIA2S+ youth.

The resources developed as part of this project will help families, communities, and various LGBTQIA2S+ youth-serving professionals more effectively tailor and implement strengths-based approaches to suicide prevention for LGBTQIA2S+ youth. Project dissemination and promotion will ensure resources are used by those who can have an impact on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQIA2S+ youth.
