William is a geriatrician, a palliative medicine physician, and a health policy researcher. He studies geriatric oncology and associated models of care. His work elucidates the impact of management choices and medical decision-making on important clinical outcomes in older adults. He has published over 200 articles on these topics.
At NORC, William acts as a Co-Investigator on the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), a longitudinal panel study of older adults in the United States. He assists with the design and analysis of NSHAP measures related to cancer screening, social support, and quality of life.
In addition to his role at NORC, William is the Director of the Center for Cancer and Aging and the Chair of the Department of Supportive Care Medicine at City of Hope National Medical Center. He was previously a faculty member of the University of Chicago medical school, founding director of the Specialized Oncology Care & Research in the Elderly (SOCARE) Clinic at the University of Chicago, and associate director of the University of Chicago’s MD/PhD Program in Medicine, Social Science, and Humanities.
