NORC Seeks Scholars for Equity Research Program

CHICAGO, October 5, 2023 — NORC at the University of Chicago is inviting early career research professionals and advanced doctoral and postdoctoral students to apply to its Equity Scholars Program. The program aims to expand, mentor, and support emerging social scientists conducting inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive research.
Experts from NORC’s Center on Equity Research and Education & Child Development and Statistics & Data Science departments will guide awardees in designing, analyzing, and employing culturally responsive and equitable approaches to conduct secondary analyses of data from the Youth and Teen Math Mindset Study. Program participants will explore the study’s dataset to uncover new findings about how historically marginalized and/or minoritized students' perceptions of math and their math skills influence overall math performance.

Awardees will join multiple networking opportunities with their cohort and NORC staff throughout the eight-month program.

“Our goal is to arm the next generation of researchers with needed tools to investigate how structures and other societal contexts frame the experiences of historically marginalized and/or minoritized populations,” said Ashani Johnson-Turbes, director of the Center on Equity Research. “Exploring strengths within diverse communities and identifying within-group variation will support scholars’ efforts to enhance programs, evaluate policies, and examine the broad impacts of structural racism.”
The Equity Scholars Program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will provide each Equity Scholar with $8,000. The program will run from November 2023 through June 2024, and the estimated time commitment is one day a week.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in a doctoral program (i.e., students in their third year or higher of a PhD, PsyD, EdD, ScD, DrPH program), a postdoctoral student, or an early career scholar (up to five years postdoctoral experience).
- Have a strong documented interest in researching topics related to diversity, disparities, equity, and inclusion.
- NORC encourages all people who are qualified to apply. Applicants need not be U.S. citizens.
