Promoting Equitable & Culturally Responsive Practices Among Youth Leaders

Problem

The Delaware Department of Education is piloting training for youth leaders to support and activate equitable and culturally responsive leadership.

The Delaware Department of Education’s (DDOE) Career and Technical Education (CTE) equity work group sought to empower elected CTE youth leaders by providing them with learning opportunities focused on culturally responsive leadership practices. Each student received a stipend to fully participate in a pilot learning series. 

The learning series is developed and designed as follows:

  • Session 1: Leading for Equity and Cultural Responsiveness: Examining Inwardly (A Critical First Step)
  • Session 2: And How Are the Children: A Need for Cultural Responsiveness for Optimal Student Learning (Developing a Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Mindset)
  • Session 3: Embracing and Activating CRP in the Daily Rhythm of Our Work
  • Session 4: Leading with an Equity and CRP Lens (A Humanizing Approach)
  • Session 5: Embracing and Activating Equity and Cultural Responsiveness in our Daily Rhythm (Phase 1)
  • Session 6: Embracing and Activating Equity and Cultural Responsiveness in our Daily Rhythm (Phase II)

Solution

DDOE hired NORC to partner with the CTE work group to conduct a pilot equity and culturally responsive practice learning series.

The pilot helped youth leaders activate their citizenry and apply equity, humanizing, and culturally responsive leadership practices. NORC helped CTE youth leaders learn equitable, humanizing, and culturally responsive leadership practices and develop a plan to activate them while serving in middle school and high school CTE leadership roles.

Result

Youth leaders learned how to use equity and culturally responsive leadership practices. 

The training will empower the CTE youth leaders to identify ways in which they will activate equitable, humanizing, and culturally responsive practices in present and future leadership roles with fidelity.
