Problem

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) sought to improve the experience of its Engagement Awardees.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington Engagement Award (EA) program supports engagement projects across three areas: capacity building, dissemination initiatives, and stakeholder convening support.

In 2024, PCORI opened capacity building EA funding opportunities to prior program awardees to help them build on and extend their work in patient-centered comparative effectiveness research (CER), which compares the effectiveness of two or more treatments or interventions. PCORI now seeks to understand the perspectives and experiences of returning awardees and how to enhance opportunities for them.

Solution

NORC will use qualitative analyses to evaluate the experience of past awardees.

PCORI commissioned NORC to analyze feedback they received on their EA program to identify ways that the program could be improved or expanded. We will analyze qualitative data that PCORI collected using three methods: responses to a public request for information, key informant interviews with past awardees, and a panel discussion. Specifically, we will examine qualitative data to identify limitations or gaps in existing funding opportunities and suggestions for new opportunities to support capacity building in patient-centered CER.

Result

NORC’s analysis will help PCORI improve the Engagement Award program experience for returning and future awardees.

Our study will identify cross-cutting themes and synthesize findings to help inform PCORI’s new EA funding opportunities. These findings will be disseminated in a public webinar and within PCORI, as the institute continues the process of developing a potential new award mechanism.
