Strategic Landscape Assessment of Health Workforce Initiatives
Problem
There is a need to expand a diverse workforce trained in conducting and partnering in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR).
In 2021, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s (PCORI) Board of Governors adopted the National Priorities for Health, a set of long-term goals that informs PCORI’s research agenda. The National Priorities for Health and PCORI’s Strategic Plan provide a roadmap for PCORI activities. PCORI‘s PCOR Infrastructure and Innovation division oversees a portfolio of funded work and strategic partnerships that support the development of training programs and materials to promote advances in patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) and accelerate progress toward an integrated learning health system. This work aligns with PCORI’s commitment to building an expanded, strong, diverse, and sustainable workforce trained in conducting and partnering in patient-centered CER.
Solution
NORC conducted a landscape assessment of health research workforce initiatives.
PCORI engaged NORC to provide a strategic assessment of health research workforce initiatives to inform PCORI’s strategic and funding priorities in workforce development. This work is instrumental to PCORI’s efforts to lay the groundwork for a diverse and sustainable patient-centered CER workforce. Through this landscape assessment, NORC identified key initiatives, gaps, and challenges in the funding and training landscape, and proposed strategic priorities for PCORI’s consideration.
Result
Our work will help identify opportunities to expand the PCOR workforce.
To support PCORI’s goals, NORC has:
- Articulated areas of opportunity for PCORI to lead or partner on initiatives
- Identified strategic priorities for PCORI's workforce development in patient-centered CER
- Developed a conceptual framework of PCORI’s strategic priorities for workforce development initiatives in patient-centered CER
- Summarized findings, opportunities, and strategic priorities in a final report, to support PCORI’s efforts to build an expanded, strong, diverse, and sustainable workforce in patient-centered CER.
